Santa Rosa school district seeks input on trustee area boundaries

Santa Rosa City Schools wants the community’s input on drawing new trustee area boundaries for future district elections. The district is holding a public hearing during its regularly scheduled school board meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Rosa City Hall’s Council Chambers.

It’s the first in a series of public hearings the district is holding as it starts the cumbersome process of drawing up district boundaries. Another hearing will be held Sept. 27.

The school board last month voted 6-0 to ditch districtwide elections and roll out a new system where residents cast ballots by geographic area. The groundbreaking shift came weeks after a Malibu attorney sent letters to the school district, arguing at-large elections violate the California Voting Rights Act. The attorney also sent a similar letter to the city of Santa Rosa, which also is making the switch from at-large to district elections.
