Fires close roads, Sonoma County airport; SMART resumes service

Here’s an update on the roads that have been closed in Sonoma County due to multiple fires burning out of control.|

The following roads are blocked because of traffic:

• Highway 101 from Steele Lane to River Road

• Highway 101 at Highway 12 southbound

• Mark West Springs Road at Old Redwood Highway

• Bennett Valley Road

• Warm Springs Road

Authorities urged residents not to call 911 unless you are reporting an active fire.

Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport:

All commercial flights are canceled until at least the afternoon. Airport manager Jon Stout said power is out at the terminal and visibility is poor because of heavy smoke, grounding several air tankers.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit:

SMART canceled morning commute service because of “extreme fire conditions,” but resumed limited service Monday afternoon.

Following an inspection of tracks and equipment, the rail line was scheduled to begin free service from the Santa Rosa downtown station to downtown San Rafael, starting at 2:31 p.m. A second southbound train will depart Santa Rosa at 5:31 p.m. Northbound trains will depart from San Rafael at 3:59 and 6:59 p.m.

“It’s a limited service,” said Jeanne Mariani-Belding, a SMART spokeswoman. “We’re hoping it will be helpful.”

Because of poor visibility and other fire conditions, trains will sound a safety horn at all crossings. The agency is working to restore full service as soon as possible, she said.
