HILO, Hawaii - Police in Hawaii say a California woman died Saturday after being swept down the Wailuku River above Rainbow Falls.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that police have identified the woman as 62-year-old Gladys F. Novinger of Springs Valley, California. Her husband, 61-year-old George T. Novinger, was with her in the water and has yet to be found.

Witnesses reported seeing the couple having difficulty swimming in the pools above the waterfall before going underwater.

Firefighters found Gladys Novinger unconscious in the water below the falls. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Fire Battalion Chief Mattias Kusch says authorities have been searching for George Novinger since the day of the incident. They will continue the search Tuesday, weather permitting.
