Honors Sunday for Lake County’s last known Pearl Harbor survivor

Bill Slater, Lake County’s last known survivor of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, will be honored in Lakeport at noon on Sunday.|

A tribute at Lake County’s Pearl Harbor memorial mast on Sunday will honor Navy veteran Bill Slater, who died Dec. 31 at the age of 93.

The gathering at noon at Lakeport’s Library Park will include reflections on Slater, who at the time of the attack that drew the U.S. into World War II was a 17-year-old sailor aboard the drydocked battleship USS Pennsylvania.

There will be a rifle salute by the Lake County Military Funeral Honors Team, and the playing of taps.

Slater retired to Lake County 30 years ago with his late wife, Helen, following a long career driving automobile transport trucks. He was believed to be Lake County’s last survivor of Imperial Japan’s world-changing 1941 attack on U.S. forces on Oahu.
