Rescuers free coyote from jar stuck around its head in Northern California

SACRAMENTO - Wildlife rescuers freed a young female coyote that wandered rural areas northeast of Sacramento with a plastic jar stuck over its head for nearly two weeks.

The Sacramento Bee reports the rescuers captured the coyote near the town of Cool on Monday and cut the jar away.

The coyote was first spotted in Coloma in late January, spurring volunteers from Gold Country Wildlife Rescue and Sierra Wildlife Rescue to search for the animal.

Rescuer Luis Escobar says a runner spotted the coyote Monday and alerted the Gold Country group. The volunteers captured the animal.

Volunteer Ben Nuckolls says the animal had injuries around its ears, and it was taken to the group's Auburn headquarters to recover.

Nuckolls says it was able to drink water on its own Tuesday morning.
