A Windsor woman has died two weeks after she was struck by a car while walking across the street, according to Windsor police.

Marie Root, 64, died Monday at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Sgt. James Percy said. Root had been hospitalized since Jan. 28, when she was struck while walking her dog in a Windsor River Road crosswalk.

The driver, Ginger Majerus, 38, of Windsor told police it was dark at the Starr Road crossing and she didn’t see the woman until it was too late, Percy said. She had halted at a stop sign and was turning onto southbound Starr Road when she struck the woman.

There was no indication of gross negligence by the driver but the case will go to the District Attorney’s Office for review, Percy said.

The uninjured dog was taken that night by a Sonoma County animal control officer.
