CHP arrests Alameda man suspected in Ukiah carjacking

An East Bay man suspected of fleeing authorities who were seeking to arrest him in connection with a Ukiah-area carjacking last week was caught Tuesday in Alameda County, CHP officials said.

David Lee Bonino II, 33, of Alameda was arrested after being identified by the CHP as well as detectives from Alameda and Mendocino counties. They were assisted in the arrest by Oakland police.

On March 6, authorities said, Bonino and a then-unreported accomplice made off with a 2005 Ford F-250 pickup and led police on a high-speed chase south on Highway 101. The alleged accomplice, 26-year-old Margarita Sobalvarro of Richmond, was driving a Chevy Camaro, and was later found in Hopland that day. A search of the Camaro found two handguns, one of which was reported stolen. Sobalvarro was arrested and booked into Mendocino County jail on six felony charges and one misdemeanor with bail set at $135,000.

Bonino, meanwhile, is believed to have ditched the pickup in the Hopland area and fled on foot into a nearby creek, where he was able to evade a large manhunt by ground and air crews in the heavily wooded area.

After being captured Tuesday in Dublin, he was held in the Alameda County jail system on multiple offenses, including carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, as well as several other felony and misdemeanor counts. Bail was set at $190,000.
