2 horses escape, killed when struck by driver

A woman driving northbound on Stony Point Road early Thursday morning was injured when she struck two escaped horses that ran out onto the major thoroughfare.

The CHP said the driver of the 2016 Nissan Altima - the car’s only occupant - was taken to a nearby hospital by a Sonoma Life Support ambulance with minor injuries.

One of the horses was killed by the impact. The other could stand but not walk, according to Rincon Valley Fire Capt. Fred Leuenberger, and had to be chemically euthanized by an emergency veterinarian called by its owners, who were at the scene.

The horses escaped their owners’ property a few hundred feet away, Leuenberger said. The collision peeled back the roof of the car, with the passenger side of the vehicle taking the brunt of the impact, he said.

Details about how the animals got out are unknown.

The incident resulted in a closure of the northbound lane of Stony Point Road between Todd Road and Scenic Avenue for about an hour. It was reopened about 2:15 a.m.

The driver was not cited.
