Lake County residents, businesses eligible for fire damage assistance

The expansion of a disaster declaration now offers federal assistance for losses from the Mendocino Complex fires.|

Lake County residents and business owners who suffered damage from this year’s wildfires can now apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, officials said.

FEMA aid, including funds to repair and rebuild homes and other structures damaged or destroyed by the Mendocino Complex fires that began July 27, is available following an amended presidential disaster declaration, Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, said in a news release.

Disaster aid for homeowners and renters may include grants for rental assistance, essential home repairs, uninsured and underinsured personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

Fire survivors in Shasta County are also eligible for the assistance, a FEMA official said.

Survivors may apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by telephone at 800-621-3362 or via TTY at 800-462-7585. The toll-free numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
