Rohnert Park man, 19, arrested in suspected DUI crash

A crash in Rohnert Park early Wednesday led to a suspected drunken driver arrest with the driver about four times the legal blood-alcohol limit, police said.

Officers arrested Ryan Maloney, 19, of Rohnert Park after going to a 12:45 a.m. collision on Santa Alicia Drive. They found a Volkswagen Jetta with major damage, which had hit a parked car, police said.

Maloney told officers he’d been leaving a friend’s home and was headed to his residence when he crashed. No one was injured but officers suspected the driver was intoxicated a subsequent investigation showed he had a preliminary blood-alcohol of more than 0.32. The legal limit for drivers is 0.08.

ROHNERT PARK – On Sept 5th at approximately 12:45 AM, Rohnert Park Officers were called to the area of Santa Alicia Drive for a report of a vehicle accident. As officers arrived, they located three males standing outside of a gray Volkswagen Jetta that had major damage as well as another vehicle that appeared to have been parked prior to being struck by the Volkswagen. None of the involved parties reported injury. Officers were able to identify the driver of the vehicle as 19 year old Rohnert Park resident, Ryan Maloney. Maloney said he was leaving a friend’s house and on his way home when he got into the collision.

As the officers were speaking to Maloney they became suspicious of his intoxication. They conducted an investigation and determined Maloney was driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) over four times the legal limit. Maloney was arrested for driving while intoxicated and subsequently transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. Gratefully, the two other passengers in the vehicle were not injured in the collision.

The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety has partnered with the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for aggressive DUI enforcement. OTS reported a 12.3% increase in teen driver fatalities over a one year period. Amongst those statistics is the impact of distracted driving. Driving impaired while distracted increases the teens chances of becoming involved in a fatal collision.
