Sonoma Coast cliff climb by teen leads to rescue
A 17-year-old who chose to scale a 100-foot cliff at a Bodega Bay beach Sunday got stuck and needed rescuing, firefighters said.
The Sacramento-area teen had been with friends at Miwok Beach, north of Salmon Creek. He was aiming to reach the parking lot some 100 feet up by free-climbing when he got into trouble, said Bodega Bay firefighter-paramedic Marco Barros.
The teen got stuck about 30 feet from the top. A friend waiting up above called for help at almost 8:30 p.m. How long the teen had been stuck wasn’t clear, Barros said.
Bodega Bay, Bodega and Monte Rio firefighters and state parks rangers set up a rope rescue from the cliff top and lowered Barros to the teen, who was put into a harness and hauled up.
The teen, whose name wasn’t released, was a little embarrassed and grateful, but not injured.
Fire officials remind coast visitors to use proper trails.
