A U.S. postal worker came to an officer’s aid Tuesday after a suspect injured him, Santa Rosa police said.

The officer was responding to a theft at a Safeway store on Yulupa Avenue around 4 p.m. when he spotted the suspect walking in the area. He attempted to arrest him, but a struggle ensued, police said.

The postal worker saw the fight and helped the officer detain the man, later identified as Jade Youngweaver, 23, of Santa Rosa, police said. The mail carrier held the suspect down until additional officers arrived and handcuffed the man, Sgt. Kyle Philp said.

The officer was treated at a hospital for a minor arm injury and released.

Youngweaver, who was found carrying items taken from the grocery store, was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of battery on an officer, resisting arrest, petty theft and shoplifting, police said. He remained in jail Wednesday on $10,000 bail.
