A wayward car became pinned on the railroad tracks in Petaluma, delaying Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit service for about an hour and a half Friday morning.

The car drove on the SMART tracks from McDowell Boulevard and got stuck at about 5 a.m., said Jeanne Belding, a spokeswoman for the commuter rail agency.

“When cars drive onto the tracks, the vehicle gets stuck because the tracks are not designed for cars,” Belding said in an email.

The vehicle had to be towed off the tracks, which then had to be inspected, Belding said. She referred questions about the driver to the Petaluma Police Department, which did not immediately return a request for more information.
