CHP: DUI driver hits, kills bicyclist in west Marin County

The bicyclist was riding southeast of Point Reyes Station, according to the CHP.|

WOODACRE, CA. – On Monday, October 29th, 2018 at approximately 5:35 PM, Marin CHP officers were dispatched to a call of a vehicle versus bicycle collision on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, west of Railroad Avenue, in rural west Marin. Fire/paramedic crews from Marin County Fire also responded to the scene and located a cyclist in a ditch near the right shoulder. The cyclist was quickly assessed by paramedics and was determined to have sustained major injuries requiring immediate transport to Marin General Hospital. We are sad to report that the cyclist was pronounced deceased at the hospital as a result of their injuries. Once on scene, officers contacted 24 year-old Paula Drake of Fairfax and determined her to be the driver of the 2006 Ford Explorer that struck that cyclist. A DUI investigation was initiated and Drake was subsequently arrested for felony DUI causing death and vehicular manslaughter. All lanes of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard remained open during the investigation as the collision scene was contained on the right shoulder. Officers have already spoken to witnesses that stopped on scene, however we are asking that anybody who witnessed the actual collision please contact the Marin CHP office at (415)924-1100.

The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld at this time pending notification of the next of kin. Any questions regarding the ID should be directed to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office – Coroner Division.
