Fort Bragg woman arrested in assault on spouse

A Fort Bragg woman was arrested for suspected assault with a deadly weapon after what witnesses said was an attack on her domestic partner that included kicking him down the stairs outside their residence and then stabbing him in the neck with a Swiss Army knife, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect, Michelle Lynn Smith, 49, was arrested at the couple's Babcock Lane home and booked into the Mendocino County Jail in Ukiah, with bail of $30,000, authorities said.

The 47-year-old man suffered several bone fractures and a 1?-inch laceration in his neck, the sheriff's office said.

He was admitted to Mendocino Coast District Hospital and remained there Thursday, though his condition was not immediately available.

Authorities said the man was returning to the couple's upstairs home around 8 p.m. Wednesday when Smith met him at the top of the stairs and kicked him in the knee, causing him to lose his balance and fall.

Witnesses said she kicked him several more times as he tumbled down the stairs, then stabbed him in the neck once he landed at the bottom, the sheriff's office said.
