Lake County CHP officers are investigating a puzzling death on a remote Lake County road that could be a fatal hit-and-run crash or a slaying.

The case initially was reported about 3:40 p.m. Monday as a hit-and-run fatality on Elk Mountain Road. The rural road is in the Mendocino National Forest, east of Potter Valley.

But further investigation had officers considering the possibility the death was a homicide, Lake County CHP Sgt. Nenad Gorenec said Tuesday.

Details on the scene or victim weren't available.

An autopsy set for Monday was expected to help determine whether the case could be a homicide, the sergeant said.

Lake County sheriff's detectives are working with the CHP on the investigation.

The sergeant asked anyone with information to contact Lake County CHP officers at 707-279-0103.
