Talmage homeowner shoots suspected burglar after assault with book

A Talmage resident shot a suspected burglar early Wednesday morning after returning home from work to find his windows broken and front door open, possessions strewn about his yard, and a man he didn’t know asleep on his living room couch.

Deputies with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2400 block of Mill Creek Road in the sparsely populated area southeast of Ukiah following the homeowner’s 3 a.m. call reporting the break-in. Armed with a handgun, the resident re-entered his home after calling 911 and was ambushed by 37-year-old Marcus D’Angelo Davis, of Oakland, who used a large book to deliver a blow to the man’s head, knocking him to the ground, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The resident then fired several small caliber rounds at Davis, hitting him in the arm and upper torso before holding him at gunpoint while deputies made their way to the home. Davis was arrested and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and booked into Mendocino County Jail.

He is charged with three felonies, including burglary, vandalism and assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm. Davis remained in jail Friday on $30,000 bail.

The case has been sent to the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office for review. The homeowner has not been charged in the incident, said Lt. Shannon Barney of the Sheriff’s Office.
