Sonoma police officers are investigating an attack involving a teen who was hit in the leg with a baseball bat Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses reported the assault at about 12:40 p.m. on Broadway near Sonoma Valley High School. Two 19-year-old Sonoma men were detained shortly after, but no arrests were made because officers could not find the victim, said Sgt. Spencer Crum of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, which contracts with the city to provide police services.

The witnesses told authorities one of the men got out of a black Chevy truck and hit a high school-aged boy in the leg with a bat, Crum said. The suspect then jumped back into the truck and the driver sped away.

“The witnesses called right away and followed the vehicle from the scene in their car,” Crum said.

Sonoma officers pulled over the truck on Highway 121 east of Highway 12, a couple miles from the high school. It’s unclear whether the men knew the victim, said Crum, who did not know if the suspects were former students at the high school.

A resource officer who works at the school is helping with the investigation, Crum said.

Sonoma police urged the victim or anyone who witnessed the assault to call 707-996-3602.
