Man killed in crash on Highway 29 in Lake County

The victim of a fatal collision Thursday near the Lake County community of Lower Lake has been identified as Clearlake Oaks resident Harvey King, 66.

King died at the scene of the 2:27 p.m. crash after crossing into an oncoming lane on Highway 29 between Lower Lake and the Hidden Valley Lake subdivision, the CHP said.

Authorities said King was northbound in a 2003 Ford Taurus when he drifted across a double yellow line and into the southbound lane for unknown reasons.

His car struck an oncoming Ford F-450 truck, causing its left-side tires to deflate and sending the truck into a roll, the CHP said.

The truck landed back on its wheels across the highway, blocking both lanes of traffic.

Its driver, Larry Wolfe of Cobb, suffered minor injuries.

A third driver, Patrick Bauman, a Tennessee resident, was behind the northbound Taurus in a 1999 Jeep, the CHP said.

Seeing the crash in front of him, Bauman swerved to avoid hitting the other vehicles and instead veered off the road and into a tree, the CHP said.

Bauman was uninjured and was able to drive his Jeep from the scene, the CHP said.

An autopsy should help investigators determine whether chemical impairment or health problems caused King to lose control of his car, CHP Officer Steven Tanguay said.

The incident closed the highway for about an hour before it was reopened to one-way traffic, Tanguay said.
