Fire damages east Santa Rosa home

An east Santa Rosa home caught fire Monday afternoon, forcing the brief closure of a stretch of Hoen Avenue in both directions, according to emergency dispatch reports.

The fire was reported at 3:50 p.m. at a duplex on Hoen Avenue at Yulupa Avenue, said Santa Rosa fire Battalion Chief Mark Basque.

It started from cooking on a stove top and flames shot up into the attic. Santa Rosa firefighters stopped the flames in the attic, keeping them from spreading through the common attic space to the adjoining residence, Basque said.

Firefighters closed the major eastside route from Yulupa to Franquette avenues to allow access to a fire hydrant.

Basque estimated $15,000 in damage, mainly to the attic.
