Marin County man accused of deputy threats pleads not guilty

SAN RAFAEL - A Marin County man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he threatened to shoot sheriff's deputies and wildlife rangers.

Charles Byon Nishi entered his plea Tuesday in Marin County Superior Court, where he was charged with making criminal threats and other offenses.

Authorities say the 40-year-old e-mailed the threats to the U.S. Air Force in Washington D.C. last month, claiming rangers and deputies in the county were hunting him and "endangered lions" in open space areas.

The Air Force faxed the e-mail to the sheriff's department, alerting authorities in the area to look for Nishi. He was arrested near the College of Marin campus.

Nishi remains held in Marin County Jail on $25,000 bail. His is due back in court April 14.
