Santa Rosa police arrested three men on suspicion of bike theft during a sting operation Monday night and early Tuesday.

Police would not provide any details about the sting operation, such as the kinds of bikes used, where the bikes were placed and whether they were locked.

“We don’t want to show our hand,” said Sgt. Josh Ludtke, who works in the property crimes unit. “The deployment of the bait bikes is based on scientific data. … As to where, when and why we deploy bikes in that program, there is rhyme and reason.”

Daniel Pilar Cory, 29, was arrested on suspicion of grand theft and possession of stolen property. Cory, who was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, was also charged with an outstanding warrant and possession of a concealed dagger.

Seven hours later, police arrested Ricardo Geronimo Roybal, 30, and Austin James Greenwood, 21, during the sting. The two were booked on suspicion of grand theft and possession of stolen property and burglary tools.

Police described all three men as transients. All three were booked into Sonoma County Jail.

Police urged bike owners to take cellphone photos of their bikes and serial numbers, which can help investigators recover a bike if it is stolen. Police also advised bike owners to invest in U-style locks, which are generally more secure than cable locks, and lock their bikes to an immovable object through both the frame and wheels.
