The Mendocino County Coroner’s Office is attempting to identify a man found dead in a cabin fire near Laytonville.

Saturday’s predawn fire burned a log home on Highway 101 near Covelo Road, about 9 miles south of Laytonville. Investigators believe they know the man’s name but need to confirm his identity, sheriff’s Lt. Shannon Barney said.

Laytonville firefighters and Cal Fire responded to a 4:13 a.m. call of a structure fire. When the fire was extinguished the body was found inside, Barney said.

The fire’s cause remained under investigation.

It was the second fatal fire in Mendocino County in less than one week. A Lake County man died in a recreational vehicle fire Nov. 27 in Potter Valley.
