Thumbs up: From Santa Rosa to Rio de Janeiro

After winning the 200m butterfly at the USA Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, swimmer Michael Phelps saluted his supporters with a high-five, a move symbolizing how this will be his record fifth Olympics.

Today, we're recognizing a couple of local swimmers - Maya DiRado and Molly Hannis - with a single thumbs up for making it to their first Olympics.

DiRado, 23, a graduate of Maria Carrillo High School and Stanford University, earned her way with first-place finishes in the 200 and 400 individual medleys and 200 backstroke. The third qualifying event came by beating Missy Franklin, the four-gold-medal star of the 2012 Olympics, by a full second.

Meanwhile, Hannis, 24, a Santa Rosa High School and University of Tennessee graduate, finished second in the 200-meter breaststroke to also earn her first trip to the Olympics. Hannis narrowly missed qualifying days earlier in the 100 breaststroke, finishing third, about half a second out of the running.

But don't expect any more trips from the recently married DiRado, who has made clear this will be her first and last Olympics as she's scheduled to start a job as a business analyst in Atlanta soon.

“It's so much easier to be excited about all of this and give it everything I have when I know that this is my last go-through,” she said before the trials.

Hmm.

Here's another thumbs up for keeping life - and sports - in perspective.
