Play the song
EDITOR: I was upset to hear radio stations were taking “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” off of their Christmas playlists. I cut my feminist eye teeth on the revolutionary literature of the 1960s and ’70s. My generation raised our children on books like “Free to be You and Me,” stories that let boys know it’s all right to cry and that girls could be anything they wanted to be. No Barbie dolls, no princes. We taught our daughters to raise their hands, to stand up.
When I hear women now can’t even put up with a 75-year-old song about a man trying to seduce a woman in a snowstorm, I can’t believe it. I hope some of the radio stations resist. Mothers need to embolden their daughters, help them make change. Not like this. It’s just a song.
Aiding the migrants
EDITOR: The migrant situation has drawn continuous attention from the White House, Fox News and all the media. It seems to me that a simple solution can be found in scripture in the parable of the good Samaritan. With about 384,000 Christian churches in the United States, surely there must be a few thousand that would sponsor and assist 5,000 migrants. Those congregations that didn’t take in a migrant could contribute a few dollars to a good Samaritan fund to help those that did.
Saving the planet
EDITOR: If you are like me, you are increasingly worried about the fate of the planet in regards to climate change. Between the fires, killer storms and melting glaciers, it is obvious we are quickly sliding into major planetary change. At the same time, we have an administration hell-bent on digging up more fossil fuels. The term “crimes against humanity” is crossing my mind.
We can’t just wait for others to do something. Every one of us has a part to play. Our lifestyle choices can make things better or worse.
Can we drive less, use public transportation, ride a bike or, if we can afford it, buy an electric vehicle? Can we eat less meat (a huge contributor to climate change) and eat more plant-based foods? Can we purchase more locally sourced merchandise and food so less energy is used on shipping? Can we support efforts and candidates from local to national who take this issue very seriously?
All life forms that we know of, from humans to microbes (such as the ones that live in your gut and make digestion possible) have but one home: planet Earth. Make it unlivable, and there is nowhere else to go.
Quitting without notice
EDITOR: I just finished reading the article about employees “ghosting” (“As market booms, workers ‘ghosting,’ ” Thursday). What’s wrong with these ill- behaved brats? They need a good swift kick in the rear. What’s wrong with their employers? If I had an employee who just didn’t show up one day, you better believe they would get an F- for any future reference. But maybe I’m just old-fashioned and a stick in the mud.
