Ryan Haug, the Big 8 Conference Player of the Year, is headed to Tucson.

The freshman catcher who anchored Santa Rosa Junior College's stingy defense this season is set to play Div. I baseball for the University of Arizona Wildcats next season.

Haug, a 2013 Rancho Cotate High grad, hit .448 in league and had a .545 on-base percentage for the Bear Cubs this season. He also had a near-miraculous one passed ball behind the plate.

SEQUEIRA NAMED OLERUD FINALIST

And then there were three.

Petaluma High and Santa Rosa Junior College alum Anthony Sequeira is one of three finalists for the John Olerud Award given to the nation's top two-way player. The award is given by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Of the three finalists, Sequeira, a senior at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., had the top batting average, hitting .341 with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs in 56 games. On the mound, Sequeira was 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA and 11 saves in 32â…” innings for the Golden Eagles. Sequeira was selected in the MLB Amateur Draft in the 23th round, 684th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies.

BOWEN 7TH AT BROOKS INVITATIONAL

Rylee Bowen, an incoming sophomore at Sonoma Academy next fall, finished seventh out of 13 of the nation's fastest runners at the expenses-paid Brooks Invitational meet in Seattle on June 20.

It was a strong bounceback from Bowen, who won the Div. 5 CIF cross-country title last fall, after she finished 11th out of 12 1600-meter runners at the CIF Track and Field Championships in Clovis this month.

Bowen's mile time was 4:48.9 (4:47.2 for 1600 meters) in Seattle. Her fastest 1600 meters this season was 4:43.9 at the Meet of Champions in May.

Kirsten Carter, a sprint specialist who rewrote Empire record books for Santa Rosa High this spring, had a disappointing finish in Seattle. Carter, also an incoming sophomore, ran a 1:02 in the 400 meters — well off the 54.24 she ran at the MOC. She crossed the line last among those who finished the race.

SOL LOOKING TO CLINCH WEST

The Sonoma County Sol will finish out the regular season with a match Saturday night against the San Francisco Stompers at Boxer Stadium in San Francisco.

The Sol, a semipro team made up primarily of players from area high schools as well as Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State, currently sit atop the 12-team West Region of the National Premier Soccer League.

A win Saturday against the 11th-ranked Stompers would likely earn Sol a No. 1 seed in the West Region, meaning home games heading into the Final Four as well as a first-round bye in the playoffs.

JAGUARS TO HONOR CORRIVEAU

The Windsor High School girls basketball program will dedicate its upcoming Sonoma County Shootout basketball tournament in memory of Tom Corriveau, Analy High School's girls varsity head coach and longtime youth sports coach, who died last Friday.

Corriveau, 57, led the Analy Tigers for two years but spent the last two decades coaching youth and high school sports. Corriveau served as an assistant to Windsor head coach Jeff Paul for years.

T-shirts, donated by NorCal Academy, for whom Corriveau coached for years, will be sold and proceeds will be given to the Analy girls basketball program, according to Paul.

Participating teams include Windsor, Analy, Montgomery, Ukiah and Marin Catholic high schools. Games begin at 2 p.m. today and run through Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students. Seniors and kids younger than 12 are free.
