Sports stars like former Giants slugger Barry Bonds and Royals pitcher Bret Saberhagen were among the athletes forced to flee the fire in Santa Rosa early Monday, Saberhagen telling the San Francisco Chronicle "it was a crazy, surreal night."
The two were among a group of athletes in town to attend 49er legend Ronnie Lott's celebrity golf tournament at Mayacama Golf Club.
Saberhagen said, "I was out on the balcony at Mayacama when the power went out and sat down, and saw the moon come up. It was very nice. And then I saw the moon turn orange and its started getting lighter and lighter. I saw the fire coming over the ridge and I could heard propane and gas tanks popping."
When ordered to evacuate, Saberhagen ended leaving up his golf clubs in the parking lot in order to squeeze fellow golfer and Olympic speedskater Dan Jansen and his wife into his car, driving all the way to Santa Clara County to spend the night.
Bonds even shuttled guests who did not have rides away from the golf course to safety.
