SRJC men's basketball reaches 'Final 8' state tournament

The Santa Rosa Junior College men's basketball team earned a trip to the state championship tournament by winning its 21st game in a row, breaking away late from Foothill College for the 83-78 victory on Saturday night.

Skylar Chavez, the Big 8 player of the year, led the Bear Cubs with 28 points. Cetrick Yeanay added 14 and Malcolm Jenkins and Sadik Sufi each had 10.

The teams kept it close for most of the contest, with SRJC entering halftime at Haehl Pavilion with a 33-31 lead.

The fourth-ranked Bear Cubs began pulling away late in the second half, however - entering the final minute of play with an 82-66 lead against the No. 5 Owls, who then went on a 12-1 run to close to within 5 points as the game ended.

Santa Rosa moves on to the Final 8 at Ventura College next weekend. Games begin Friday.
