SANTA CLARA — Coach Mike Singletary wants to implement a physical offense that will be able to impose its will on defenses with a stout running game.

Yet, the club’s two most noteworthy offseason additions have been wide receivers, including the selection Saturday of Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree with the No.10 overall pick.

The 49ers signed Brandon Jones from the Tennessee Titans early in free agency.

“He (Crabtree) has to prove that he deserves it,” 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said. “I think he’ll step up to the challenge and prove to us that we made the right pick.”

The 49ers selected running back Glen Coffee of Alabama in the third round to replace backup DeShaun Foster and complement workhorse Frank Gore.

In free agency, the 49ers added right tackle Marvel Smith and defensive end Demetric Evans to replace Jonas Jennings and Ronald Fields.

Here’s a look at the significant offseason comings and goings for the other NFC teams:

Arizona Cardinals — The league’s worst running game got some help with the selection of Chris “Beanie” Wells (Ohio State). The Cardinals shored up their secondary with the signing of Super Bowl-winning cornerback Bryant McFadden from the Steelers.

Atlanta Falcons — The Falcons spent their top two picks on defense: tackle Peria Jerry (Mississippi) and safety William Moore (Connecticut). The club lost defenders — linebackers when Keith Brooking and Michael Boley, and cornerback Domonique Foxworth.

Carolina Panthers — The Panthers dealt their 2010 first-round pick to the 49ers to select defensive end Everette Brown (Florida State), with franchise player Julius Peppers demanding a trade.

Chicago Bears — The Bears made big moves with a trade for quarterback Jay Cutler and signing of left tackle Orlando Pace. The Bears were quiet in the draft, waiting until the third round to select defensive end Jarron Gilbert (San Jose State) and receiver Juaquin Iglesias (Oklahoma).

Dallas Cowboys – It was a quiet draft for the Cowboys, selecting quarterback Stephen McGee of Texas A&M in the fourth. The Cowboys parted ways this offseason with receiver Terrell Owens, safety Roy Williams linebacker Zach Thomas and defensive end Chris Canty. They added Keith Brooking and Igor Olshansky.

Detroit Lions – The Lions used the No.1 pick on quarterback Matthew Stafford, then got a target for him with tight end Brandon Pettigrew (Oklahoma State). The Lions have been active acquiring veterans, such as linebacker Julian Peterson, cornerback Phillip Buchanon, and receivers Bryant Johnson and Ronald Curry.

Green Bay Packers — The Packers traded up for two first-round selections: defensive tackle B.J. Raji (Boston College) and linebacker Clay Matthews (USC). It was a slow free-agency for the Packers, who did not gain or lose much of consequence.

Minnesota Vikings — The Vikings wanted to upgrade their quarterback situation. They settled for Sage Rosenfels in a trade with the Texans. But the Vikings selected a big-play threat, receiver Percy Harvin of Florida, with the No.22 pick.

New Orleans Saints — In an effort to strengthen their secondary, the Saints guaranteed $10 million to sign cornerback Jabari Greer from the Bills as a free agent and then selected Malcolm Jenkins (Ohio State) with the No.14 overall pick.

New York Giants – The Giants used two of their top four picks on receivers Hakeem Nicks (North Carolina) and Ramses Barden (Cal Poly) after releasing Plaxico Burress. The Giants delved into free agency to acquire defensive linemen Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty.

Philadelphia Eagles — The Eagles traded up in the first round for receiver Jeremy Maclin (Missouri). They added running back LeSean McCoy (Pitt) in the second round. The Eagles replaced left tackle Tra Thomas with Jason Peters.

St. Louis Rams — The Rams hope No.2 overall pick Jason Smith (Baylor) can replace Orlando Pace. In free agency, they spent big money on center Jason Brown and picked up safety James Butler from the Giants.

Seattle Seahawks – The Seahawks took linebacker Aaron Curry (Wake Forest) at No.4. They later added to offense with lineman Max Unger (Oregon) and wideout Deon Butler (Penn State) to go along with veteran addition T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Bucs traded up to select quarterback Josh Freeman at No.17 after signing veteran Byron Leftwich to replace Jeff Garcia as the starter.

Washington Redskins — The Redskins’ big offseason move was their $100-million contract for defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. They added to the defensive line with the selection of Brian Orakpo with the No.13 overall pick.
