The California Highway Patrol on Thursday arrested a Windsor man suspected of driving through a row of mail boxes on Laguna Road at Maryannis Drive near Forestville before getting stuck in a ditch.

Officers Matthew Werle and David Stewart were called to the scene at 5:25 p.m Thursday and arrived to find a 2003 Ford Windstar abandoned on the side of the road.

Several witnesses told officers the driver had tried to jump into a passing vehicle after it stopped to offer assistance and was trying to flee on Maryannis Drive.

Officers pursued the man and found Jason Edward Smith, the registered owner of the van, sitting on the steps of a residence on Maryannis Drive.

Smith, 39, was shoeless, combative and apparently intoxicated, according to the Highway Patrol. He refused to answer questions or perform field sobriety tests and made repeated threats to the two officers, the CHP said.

Smith was being held at Sonoma County jail on $5,000 on suspicion of DUI and misdemeanor hit and run. He has a prior conviction for hit and run and two prior convictions for driving under the influence, according to the Highway Patrol.
