A woman’s body was discovered Sunday afternoon in the Russian River outside of Ukiah, investigators said Tuesday.

The body was recovered after a kayaker reported it about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities searched the river near Morrison Creek and Old River Road, about 2 miles south of Ukiah’s city limits.

About 5:35 p.m., firefighters found the body using an unmanned aerial vehicle and a swift water rescue took place in “fast-moving water,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators discovered the woman was in a “state of advanced decomposition” after being in the water for an extended period of time.

She could not be immediately identified, and there were no “obvious signs of external trauma,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
