Venge Vineyards and Winery of Calistoga has purchased the Robert Rue Vineyard in Fulton and has renamed it for its sister brand, Croix Estate.

Kirk Venge, the 40-year-old proprietor of his family winery, bought the Russian River Valley winery, a farmhouse and a vineyard that features 9 acres of old vine zinfandel, said Jason Williams, general manager for Venge Vineyards and Winery. The winery has a permit to produce 5,000 cases.

Venge intends to keep the zinfandel vines on the property and plans annual production for Criox at around 2,300 cases, focusing on high-end pinot noir and chardonnay sourced from local vineyards, Williams said.

Its chardonnay retails from $50 to $125 a bottle.

The tasting room will be closed at least until Aug. 1 for property renovations until it reopens by appointment only.
