“Backward Currency,” an exhibit of work by Santa Rosa artist and Piner High School teacher Nick Mancillas, is on display through Oct. 4 in the Window Gallery at the Art of Museum of Sonoma County in downtown Santa Rosa.

The show features a series of satirical images dealing with money.

The pictures were created with spray paint, acrylic and watercolor from homemade stencils on reused cardboard packaging.

“To create a beautiful image on a worthless surface is half of my artistic message.

“The other half addresses the constant craving we have towards the accumulation of these venerated pieces of paper,” Mancillas said in his artist’s statement for the show.

On his website, Mancillas explained further: “I replicate the likenesses of banknotes, and in the process of production I let the images evolve whimsically, creating new interpretations of a popular image.”

The Window Gallery display is visible from outside the museum on Seventh Street near B Street, and features rotating exhibits by local artists.

Museum hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission: $10; $7, students and seniors; free 12 and younger.
