Art may imitate life but life also stimulates art, and last October’s devastating wildfires have inspired local artists in great numbers as never before.

Now the City of Santa Rosa Public Art Program is offering a new outlet for that continuing burst of creativity.

The city seeks local artists’ proposals to create and install temporary art installations addressing the 2017 Northern California wildfires as part of the city’s ongoing “Fire Response” project.

“Fire Response – Round One” is an opportunity is for artists, or artist teams to create and install temporary art installations, to be placed on view in public places for as little as one day or as long as three months.

Applicants may request up to $4,000.

Funded by the city’s ongoing public art fund, the first phase of the project seeks proposals by 5 p.m. Sept. 26 to allow installations during the first anniversary of the fires early next month, said Tara Thompson, the city’s arts coordinator.

Proposals can be either be mailed or emailed to Thompson at tthompson@srcity.org

“Fire Response – Round Two” will take place next year and include more lead time for additional projects.
