Santa Rosa police still seeking hit-and-run driver who hit skateboarder

Police on Monday were still searching for a hit-and-run driver who last week fled the scene after crashing into a 20-year-old skateboarder, who remains hospitalized with major injuries.

Santa Rosa Police ?Sgt. Ryan Corcoran urged anyone who has seen ?a damaged dark sedan since Thursday’s pre-dawn collision to notify police.

David Crowhurst, 20, of Gulf Breeze, Fla. had been riding a skateboard down the broad, long driveway of Bethlehem Lutheran Church with some of his siblings when he entered St. Francis Road in the path of an oncoming car, Corcoran said.

Crowhurst hit the windshield and was thrown. The driver didn’t stop.

It’s unknown what damage the car sustained. It did not leave any ?debris behind, Corcoran said.

Although Crowhurst was at fault in the crash for entering the roadway, where vehicles have the right-of-way and no stop sign, the driver committed a felony by leaving the scene, police said.

“The driver still has an obligation to stop,” Corcoran said.

Crowhurst suffered major injuries, with fractures from his head to his hands and significant brain swelling that has prevented him from undergoing surgery.

On Monday morning, Crowhurst’s oldest brother said his sibling has shown some improvement over the weekend and was breathing on his own and able to recognize some family members.

“The doctors seem very positive,” Joshua Crowhurst said.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Santa Rosa Police Officer Mike Mieger at 543-3636.

Crowhurst’s family has started a fund to help with medical expenses at gofundme.com/david08062015.
