Next round of king tides hitting California coast

SAN FRANCISCO — Dangerously high tides are hitting the California coast this week

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement that the San Francisco Bay will be seeing so-called king tides through Wednesday, which could bring flooding to low-lying areas like marinas and parking lots and could bring danger to boaters and others in the water due swells and rip currents.

The tides are also expected to affect the Monterey Bay and parts of Southern California.

The King Tide phenomenon is the result of a natural coastal rhythm.

It happens when the sun and moon align, which pulls ocean water to opposite sides of the earth and creates extremely high and low tides.

California faced a previous round of the tides in December.
