Golden Gate Ferry will add an additional morning commuter ferry from Larkspur to San Francisco starting Feb. 2, the agency announced Wednesday.

The 8:40 a.m. ferry will increase the number of morning trips to eight. Currently, morning ferries depart the Larkspur Ferry Terminal for the San Francisco Ferry Building between 5:45 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. There are 20 total ferry trips per day serving the route.

The new ferry trip is being added to relieve overcrowding and overflow from the earlier commute trips and will replace a backup bus service, the agency said in a statement.

The new trip, approved by the Golden Gate Transit District board in December, will run as a nine-month demonstration project. The route will be served by a catamaran that can hold up to 448 passengers. The one-way trip will take 35 minutes.
