PALO ALTO — Police say thieves backed a stolen car through a glass door of an upscale department store in the latest crash-and-grab heist in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1K7iuY0) the break in at the Bloomingdale's store at Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto was reported at 4 a.m. Wednesday by a security company checking an activated alarm.

Surveillance video shows someone driving a Jeep Cherokee in reverse through a glass door and three thieves running into the store.

It shows the burglars using tools, possibly hammers, to break open jewelry cases before jumping into the car and escaping.

Police say they stole an undisclosed amount of goods and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Police were looking into whether the burglary was related to at least seven similar crimes in the San Francisco Bay Area in the last year.
