Two more catalytic converters have been stolen from vehicles in Petaluma, raising the number of such thefts to 17 in the past week.

The thefts have been taking place at night in residential neighborhoods, police said Sunday. These latest two thefts were on Eastside Circle and Kearny Court.

The majority of the past thefts occurred in the Westridge subdivision and in the areas of Highway 101 and East Washington Street, and Maria Drive and Rainier Avenue.

Catalytic converters are stolen for the metals they contain, which can fetch up to $150 from recyclers. But police said the victimized car owner can pay more than $4,000 to replace the device.

Petaluma police are asking residents to report suspicious activity and encouraging vehicle owners to take steps to protect their cars and trucks.
