Covelo woman arrested, suspected of shooting former boyfriend in groin

The former couple was arguing over their pot garden when the woman pulled out a gun and shot the man, say authorities.|

Two Covelo residents, formerly a couple but more recently connected through their marijuana garden, got into a dispute about profits. The argument led to gunfire, followed by medical care for the wounded man and arrest for the woman, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies early Monday arrested Anna Roseberry, 32, at her home in the 23700 block of Charlie Hurt Highway, north of Covelo.

The victim, identified only as a 38-year-old Covelo man, was shot in the groin, Lt. Shannon Barney said. He was flown by medical helicopter to Redding and Monday was being treated at Mercy Trauma Center.

Calls to 911 started at 12:01 a.m. with reports of gunfire heard along a stretch of Charlie Hurt Highway followed by a call at 12:47 a.m. from the same area about a man who’d been shot, Barney said.

Deputies determined the pair, who indicated they had formerly been a couple, had gotten into a heated argument about profits and payment, with the man demanding money for his effort in the garden. Barney said Roseberry pulled out a .38-caliber revolver and shot him.

The wounded man ran from the property and got to a phone and called for help.

Deputies reported finding two guns on the property, including the revolver, 200 plants in the ground and several pounds of marijuana being processed.

Roseberry told deputies she fired to defend herself, saying the man was carrying a knife, although she also said he wasn’t threatening her with it, the lieutenant said.

She was arrested on suspicion of assault with a gun, spousal battery with injury, being armed while committing a felony and a drug charge.

Roseberry was taken to the Mendocino County Jail. Bail was set at $40,000.
