Smoke from small grass fire drifts over Sonoma County

Firefighters brought under a control a 3-acre grass fire Wednesday afternoon south of Sebastopol that sent large amounts of drift smoke over Santa Rosa.

The fire was first reported shortly before 1:30 p.m. along the 3500 block of Bloomfield Road, nearly a mile southwest of the junction with Canfield Road. Cal Fire firefighters responded to the blaze and had it under control by 3 p.m.

However, smoke from the fire was blown eastward over Santa Rosa, said Santa Rosa Battalion Chief Ken Sebastiani. Residents near Fountaingrove Parkway called dispatchers concerned about a possible grass fire in their neighborhood, but it turned out to be smoke from the Bloomfield fire, he said.

Emergency dispatch records indicated the blaze resulted from a tractor operator cutting grass in the afternoon heat. Cal Fire officials weren’t available to confirm the cause Wednesday night.
