Petaluma police are investigating an attempted holdup Wednesday in which the robber displayed a firearm but couldn’t stop his prospective victim from speeding away in her vehicle.

The robbery attempt took place shortly after 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Bank of America, 181 North McDowell Blvd., according to a police press release.

The robber, a male between 20 and 30 years of age and wearing dark clothing, approached a mother and her daughter while they were seated in their vehicle. He demanded money and revealed his weapon.

The mother, however, drove off in her vehicle. The robber then fled on foot across a large parking lot to a white sedan parked near the Raley’s supermarket. He was last seen in that vehicle as it sped south on North McDowell.

Anyone who witnessed the robbery attempt or who has information regarding the identity of the suspect is encouraged to call Petaluma Police Detective McGowan at 778-4456.
