Historic Napa post office to be up for sale

SAN FRANCISCO — The U.S. Postal Service has announced it will be auctioning off the Napa post office instead of demolishing the historic building that suffered considerable damage in the 2014 earthquake.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1gP8OWB ) that the buyer of the Art Deco building will reportedly be tasked with repairing it before converting the building to another use.

Caution tape has surrounded the building since the 6.0-magnitude quake struck, causing severe damage to the building, including cracks and crumbling bricks.

The Postal Service had announced in June that it intended to tear down the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but that decision sparked public outcry.

The building, commissioned in 1933, is to be prepared for auction later this month.
