Man struck and killed on Highway 101 in Petaluma

An 86-year-old San Rafael man was struck and killed when he exited his car after a collision on Highway 101 Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The accident occurred just north of Petaluma Blvd. North at 4:45 a.m., officials said. The man's 1995 Dodge was in the center divide after the accident, and he exited his vehicle, stepping into the northbound lane.

The man was struck by a 1996 Honda driven by Sophie Levine, 26, of Santa Rosa. The deceased man's identity was not immediately released.

Thick fog prevented Levine from seeing the man the standing in the roadway, the release said. There were other vehicles blocking the roadway that were involved in the original accident, but details about the number or types of vehicles were not released.

Levine was uninjured, and alcohol was not considered a factor in the collision, the statement said.
