The Peterson fire started about 5:30 p.m. near Peterson Lane and Adobe Creek Road and was spreading at a dangerous rate, with spotting about a quarter-mile ahead of the fire line, Cal Fire said.

The cause remained under investigation.

To the southeast, on the other side of Highway 29, firefighters reported 98 percent containment of the Jerusalem fire. The fire, which broke out Aug. 9, has burned 25,118 acres.
