Bay Area cyclist struck, killed by train

RICHMOND — Authorities say a male bicyclist in the San Francisco Bay Area was struck and killed after he tried to outrace an oncoming Union Pacific freight train.

UP spokesman Francisco Castillo Jr. says Sunday it appears the bicyclist went around the crossing gates guarding the tracks to get to the other side before the train could pass.

Castillo says no one on the train was injured in Saturday's crash. All warning signs, including crossing arms, were working properly, he says.

Castillo says it takes about a mile for a train to come to a complete stop.

The train was traveling about 38 miles per hour when it struck the bicyclist in Richmond, about 15 miles northeast of San Francisco, shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday.
