High-speed Santa Rosa chase ends in assault suspect's arrest

Santa Rosa officers called to a domestic violence assault case Tuesday morning found themselves in a short chase as the suspect tried to get away, police said.

The chase included a stretch of Highway 101, with the suspect driving 95 mph, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.

The man crashed while attempting to exit at College Avenue. He was caught a few blocks away when he gave up to an officer running behind him, Banayat said.

Daniel Ward, 28, was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, evading an officer, hit and run and driving on a suspended license.

Officers were called at 9:19 a.m. to a west Santa Rosa residence by a woman who said her boyfriend assaulted her, Banayat said. While talking to the woman, the suspect was spotted driving near State Farm Drive and Cleveland Avenue.

An officer in a patrol car attempted to stop him. Ward, in a red 1992 Ford Ranger, sped away, heading up Russell Avenue to Range to Bicentennial Way and onto the highway.

At the College Avenue exit, Ward tried to pass other vehicles on the right and hit an unoccupied, stalled vehicle on the offramp shoulder, Banayat said.

The driver then ran from his pickup and was caught by an officer at 11th and Ripley streets.
