Authorities on Saturday said the driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup was intoxicated when he crossed into oncoming traffic Friday night on a winding road east of Ukiah, crashing into a Volvo S60 sedan, killing the 81-year-old driver and seriously injuring a passenger.
The crash occurred at 7:45 p.m. on Vichy Springs Road near Watson Road outside Ukiah, according to the Ukiah CHP. Authorities identified the suspected drunken driver as Jared Soinila, 40, of Redwood Valley.
The Volvo driver, a Ukiah man, was trapped and found unconscious in the vehicle, and later was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities withheld his name Saturday pending notification of his family.
His passenger, Juana Juan, 72, was transported to the Ukiah Valley Medical Center with major injuries. Police believe the two were headed back to their Ukiah-area home after dinner.
Soinila’s pickup was traveling north on Vichy Springs Road when it collided with the Volvo, the CHP said.
Soinila was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, and following treatment for minor injuries, was transported to the Mendocino County Jail.
