One dead in vehicle crash near Laytonville

A man died early Tuesday when his vehicle drifted off Highway 101 near Laytonville, rolled and hit a tree.|

A man died early Tuesday in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Laytonville, the CHP reported.

The man’s identity and hometown have not been released because his family has not yet been notified, according to the CHP.

The crash occurred at about 3 a.m. north of Laytonville-Sherwood Road.

For unknown reasons, the driver allowed the vehicle to drift onto the road’s shoulder, the CHP said. It then struck a guardrail and went over an embankment, rolling onto its roof and crashing into a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.

Caltrans, Cal Fire, Laytonville Volunteer Fire and the Mendocino County sheriff’s personnel also responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation, the CHP said.
