Santa Rosa extends winter homeless programs

Because of recent wet weather, city officials Tuesday extended two winter programs that serve homeless people.|

Citing wet weather conditions, Santa Rosa on Tuesday extended by 30 days two winter programs serving homeless people.

The city's homeless shelter, Samuel Jones Hall, typically is allowed to house 50 additional residents between Nov. 1 and March 31. It will now get another month.

In addition, a program that allows private property owners to operate safe parking programs for the homeless also will be extended. The program, Community Homeless Assistance Pilot Program, or CHAPP, allows the temporary placement of portable toilets in conjunction with such programs without additional permitting requirements.

The cost of the extensions was estimated at $25,000.

Some council members inquired whether the programs could be extended for more than a month, but the one-month time frame was all that could be acted upon Tuesday.

The council agreed to have its housing subcommittee review further extensions.
